The Sidama nation and its people
had long history, vibrant culture and democratic system of governance based
on councils and periodic elections to authority. In the 1890s, upon forced
incorporation into the then Abyssinia, all of these were made subservient
to autocratic, unitary assimilationist rule.
Since then, the
Sidama history is one of resistance and struggle against tyranny imposed
by Ethiopian colonialism.
The Sidama people are struggling for freedom, democracy and national
self-determination.
